Hanley Town made it through to the next round of the FA Cup with a hard fought 2-1 win away at Hellenic League Premier Division side Stourport Swifts.

The first attempt at goal on 7 minutes came from Swifts J.Hull with a spectacular overhead kick going just over the Hanley crossbar. On 16 minutes a Jake Twyford cross found Joel Stair who headed just wide. Two minutes later a Twyford freekick found Tommy Van Der Laan who headed just over the crossbar.

A Reece Jones surging, weaving run on the half hour mark set up Corey Muirhead who fired just wide of the post. Two minutes later Hanley's Fin Pattison also fired just wide of the post as Hanley pressed to open the scoring. Hanley finally broke the deadlock on 43 minutes a minute after being shown a yellow card Joel Stair headed home from a Jake Twyford corner.

Hanley Town began the second half on the front foot, five minutes in new signing Devante Ramsey found Pattison with a crossfield pass, Pattison then found Twyford who fired over the crossbar. On 52 minutes Hanley were awarded a penalty after a push on Pattison, Twyford's penalty was saved by Swifts keeper C.McNamara.

But six minutes later Twyford made up for the penalty miss by firing into the top corner of the net after Kieran Lazenby raced clear before laying on a neat pass for Twyford to strike through home defenders. Stourport pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining, Tom Nicklin run into the Hanley box and cross took a wicked deflection off an Hanley Town defender into the net for a nervous finish to the game for the visiting support.

Hanley held on to the lead and now have an home tie at the NBE Brokers Stadium in the Preliminary Round of the FA CUP against Hellenic League Premier Division side Droitwich Spa on Saturday 22nd August. Our local Derby fixture against Kidsgrove Athletic in the Northern Premier League Division One West is now postponed and will now be rearranged, date to be confirmed.
